Chapter Seventeen

Fionn

Fionn’s world exploded in a firestorm of yellows and reds that whirled around him with cyclonic speed. He tensed, determined to hold back his screams for as long as he could, then realized there was no need.

He didn’t feel any pain.

Unclenching his hands from around Reid’s waist, Fionn ran his fingers through the dancing flames, his eyes widening as he realized he was standing in the middle of an inferno and it didn’t hurt. Ribbons of fire reached to the ceiling, twisting and twining, as a roaring wind swirled around them, lifting his hair in all directions. And the fire wasn’t burning him.

It was magnificent. Glorious. Fionn spun in a circle with his arms spread wide, laughing and dancing in the roaring flames. His magic rose, swirling around him, streams of blues and greens mixing with the layers of yellow and red, the conflagration swelling, churning higher and faster until it filled the room. And still he danced.

All too soon, the flames flickered and died.

“That was amazing.” Fionn threw himself at Reid, whose eyes looked a little wild. “The most incredible thing I’ve ever experienced. And it didn’t hurt at all. Why did you tell me it would?”

“It should have.”

“But it didn’t.” Not that he was complaining.

Reid’s eyes almost crossed, then he snorted. “It’s because of my dragon. He buffered you from the pain. Said you’ve been hurt enough.”

“That was nice of him.” Then Fionn did a double-take. “You talk to your dragon?”

“It’s a new thing,” Reid said dryly.

Fionn’s nose wrinkled. “Aren’t…you the dragon?”

“Yes, and no. I’m a dragon shifter, but a dragon spirit is its own entity. Normally, a dragon shifter and dragon spirit are bound so tightly they are as one.” He grimaced. “I, um, tend to push him back, so logic and not instinct, controls my thinking. But lately, my dragon’s become more insistent…and pushier.”

“Why now?”

Reid arced his eyebrow and stared at Fionn.

“Because of me?” Fionn pointed to his chest. At Reid’s nod, he muttered, “Sorry.” But he really wasn’t.

“Don’t be.”

“Will I get to meet your dragon one day?”

“Oh, yes. He’s looking forward to flying with you.”

Fionn’s eyes went wide. “I can fly? On your dragon? For real?”

“Of course.”

“Can we do it now?”

Reid laughed. “Maybe not right this minute, but soon.”

“Good. I can’t wait to meet him.”

“He feels the same way.”

Fionn grinned, hardly able to believe he’d get to meet Reid’s dragon, let alone ride him. If he looked anything like the dragon he’d met, he’d be so beautiful. And all Fionn’s. His mate. And speaking of that. He grabbed Reid’s hand. “Does this mean we’re going to finish bonding now?”

Reid startled, panic flashing in his eyes before disappearing. “Uhm, no. Not just yet.”

Fionn frowned. “Why not? Don’t you want to?”

“I do. Of course, I do. But—”

“But what?”

“It’s too soon.”

“Too soon? I know you said you wanted us to wait until we knew one another better, but we’ve done everything else. There’s no going back now, so why should we wait?”

“Because you need some time between what happened to you a couple of days ago and us having mating sex.
